Some scarring alopecia, especially following an accident or chemotherapy, is so extensive that it cannot be corrected by a hair system or trichopigmentation procedure. In such cases, a hair system or trichopigmentation may be the only solution to conceal the scars. This new-generation therapeutic wig is virtually undetectable and adapts to all styles and colors.

The advantages of a hair system

  • Adjusts perfectly to the patient’s morphology
  • Covers all or part of the scalp
  • Can be used during all daily activities (sports, shampooing, swimming pool)

What is a hair system?

A hair system is a new generation wig. It features a flexible membrane on which a specialized prosthetist attaches human or synthetic hair and which is then applied to the desired area of the head. Most hair systems are either made of polyurethane, tulle or mixed. Regardless of the material, the goal is to perfectly fit the shape of the skull and allow the scalp to breathe properly.

For which patients?

A hair system is recommended when the alopecia has progressed beyond the point where it can be corrected by transplants or restorative trichopigmentation. There are hair systems for both men and women.

What happens during a hair system fitting session?

Step 1: choosing the hair system

The prosthetist hairdresser helps the patient choose the prosthesis that best suits his or her wishes. The patient can choose a style or color that perfectly matches their natural hair or, alternatively, they may want to change their style completely. The goal, however, is for the hair system to be undetectable.

Step 2: fitting the hair system

The hair system is fixed on the patient’s head either by clipping it to the remaining hair or by securing it to the scalp with medical glue. There are long-lasting, water-resistant medical glues that allow the patient to practice sports, go to the pool and even sleep without having to remove the hair system.

Step 3: hair harmonization

Initially, the system’s hair may be relatively long. This allows the prosthetic hairdresser to give the patient the desired haircut, whether it is long or short.

Rates

Natural hair : about 1 290 euros
Synthetic fiber hair: between 300 and 700 euros

Hair Systems FAQs

Will people notice that I have a hair system?
NO – Unlike old fashioned wigs, modern hair systems are now custom made. In other words, they adapt perfectly to the patient’s morphology and blend harmoniously into the natural hair.

I have white, curly and medium-length hair. Are there hair systems that match my style?
YES – The prosthetist will find the color that suits you best, as long as all hair shades are available. All hair styles are available, since the prosthetist will trim the hair system to fit the patient’s natural hair. Of course, the goal is to make sure the hair system is completely undetectable.

Can I fit my hair prosthesis myself?
YES – But this technique must be learned. This technique is simpler for clip-on models than for glued-on models.

Can I take a shower with my hair system?
YES – Tulle-based hair systems are resistant shampoos and water. For polyurethane-based hair systems, we recommend removing them before bathing.

Should I wash my hair system?
YES – A hair system must be cleaned every eight to ten days, just like hair. Use a mild shampoo for natural hair prostheses and a specific shampoo for synthetic fibers. In both cases, you should wash the hair system with cold water.

Is there a risk that my system will be torn off by accident?
YES – Nevertheless, note that our bonding methods are more and more sophisticated and that the tearing of a hair system is very rare.

Is there a risk of intolerance?
NO – Prosthetists will use either clips or medical silicone glue. The latter is hypoallergenic. However, some patients may experience discomfort because the hair system is too hot or causes itching of the scalp.
/accordion-item]

Can the hair system damage the hair?
NO – Hair systems, including clip-ons, are specially designed to preserve the scalp and hair.

Is the hair system durable?
NO – The durability of a hair system will depend on its quality and the intensity of its use. A hair system, worn permanently, including when sleeping or exercising, will last between two and six months. On the other hand, models that can be removed every night can last up to two years if they are well maintained.

Are there any medical contraindications?
YES – Polyurethane hair systems are not recommended in case of dermatosis, scalp infection or allergy to medical adhesives.
